File Compression for Efficient Use of Storage Capacity

When you are paying for a certain amount of storage capacity, you want to know that it is being used as efficiently as possible.  That’s why iTekLogic software compresses every file before encrypting it, ensuring that it takes up as little space on our servers as possible.  File compression saves in other ways, too, as it takes your computer less time – as well as less bandwidth – to transmit a compressed file over the Internet.

It is important to realize that all files do not compress the same.  For instance, the format in which most music and photographs are stored – MP3 and JPEG, respectively – are already compressed, so the iTekLogic software won’t be able to make these files much smaller.  However, other files, such as Microsoft Word documents and many databases, can compress by as much as 80%.  As a general rule of thumb, the more text a document has in it, the more it will compress.

As you can see in the following table, compression rates may vary widely for different types of files.  Keep in mind that these compression rates are merely averages, and may not be indicative of how your files compress.

Program/File Type Extension Compression Savings 100 KB File After Compression
Microsoft Word Documents .doc 80% 20 KB
Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets .xls 75% 25 KB
Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations .ppt 65% 35KB
Microsoft Outlook .pst files .pst 50% 50 KB
QuickBooks Data File .qbw 80% 20 KB
Adobe PDF Documents .pdf 20% 80 KB
MP3 Music Files .mp3 0% 100 KB
JPEG Picture Files .jpg 5% 95 KB
